What Causes Heavy And Painful Periods After Discontinuation Of Adco Fem?

Hi Doctor, I was on AdcoFem 35 but stopped in October 2014 since it was discontinued. I haven t been taking any contraceptives since then and my periods get heavier and more painful every month. I finished my periods 4 days ago but I am still experiencing something like period pains, what could be the cause?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Heavy and painful periods may be due to hormonal imbalance. As the body adjusts the symptoms should reduce. Other medical conditions that may cause such symptoms are anemia, abnormal tissue in the uterus, such as polyps, fibroids, or adenomyosis, unovulation or PID.

You are suggested to get clinically examined by a gynecologist, get blood tests, hysteroscopy, pelvic USG, biopsy of the uterine tissue (endometrial biopsy) if required done. In the meantime, take adequate rest, stay well hydrated, take iron, calcium, protein rich diet. Avoid addictions if any. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected & your clinical condition.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
