What Causes Heavy And Painful Menstruation?

I have extremely heavy periods that last at least 5-7days. During this time I have horrible pain usually in just one side of where I m guessing my ovaries are. Its even painful to move or touch. Then even after my period is done for about a week I have a brown discharged that looks like old blood and sometimes it has a mucus consistency. I also have a new symptom. Now that period is ending the blood is thin and is an orange- red color.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I would like to suggest some tests: On the next period, Day 2, do the following tests:
1. Lower Abdomen USG (including the measurement of endometrial thickness)
2. FSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone
3. Thyroid Function Test
4. Serum Ferritin

Meanwhile, I would like to suggest this medicine for a heavy period:
Tranexamic Acid during every monthly menstruation.

I would like to suggest this medicine for pain:
Dicycloverine hydrochloride during the day of heavy pain.

Diet should be rich in vitamins and minerals like magnesium, iron and calcium. The diet should contain lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, green vegetables.

Do not drink coffee at all during period days

After seeing the result, we can determine the treatment plan. Most probably, Progesterone (Norethisterone) may be started from Day 5 to Day 21 of every menstrual cycle.

Follow these general guidelines
1. Take special attention to your food habits during your periods. It can really help you solve many difficulties associated with menstrual cramps.
2. Try to take a vitamin B and calcium pill after food, if possible. Nutritional supplements could help to reduce the pain.
3. Eat fish, chicken, vegetables and fruits along with rice.
4. You can try keeping a bottle of warm water above the stomach for some time to relieve pain and other associated symptoms of menstrual cramps.
5. Try out simple exercises such as yoga in the days before you get your periods.
6. Consumption of dates regularly is considered to help solve problems during periods.
7. Avoid taking pain killers on an empty stomach. Take pain relievers only after food.
8. Cut down the intake of salt, sweet and spicy foods.
9. Try not to take too much food at one stretch.
10. Avoid intake of tea, coffee, coke, chocolate, cold water etc during periods. Instead, you can try lemonade and herbal tea.

Do not worry and please do the tests and then post another question with the results.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
