What Causes Greenish Foul Smelling Phlegm Upon Sneezing Or Coughing?

Hi Dr. Andrew, I have occasional deep sneeze and cough together which sprays some greenish droplets and mucus that has a very bad rotten smell. I took an extended course of antibiotics, followed by blood tests (ESR), TB & HIV, had sinuses and chest x-rayed - none of the tests produced any evidence of an underlying problem. I guess it is easier to ignore such problems; but the occasional as it came today morning alerted to me to check it out once more. Would be grateful for your advice. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The greenish color and foul smell of the phlegm you described could be due to a sinus or respiratory infection, such as bronchitis or pneumonia. Bacterial infections can cause phlegm to turn green and emit a bad odor. It is possible that the previous tests did not detect the problem, so I would suggest speaking with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and possibly additional testing to determine the cause of your symptoms and the best course of treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
