What Causes Gastrointestinal Complications While On Medication For Bowel Cancer?

my 78 year old father has been diagnoised with stage 4 bowel cancer , spread to liver and brain. He is on alot of medication , 25 different tablets per day. In the last two days he cannot eat hot food or drink hot tea as it causes pain as the food is going down, Is this another stage of the cancer or due to his medication?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The advanced stage of bowel cancer manifest in multiple aspects as:
- Anorexia
- Bloating
- Constipation (usual cases, diarrhea lesser extent)
- Bleeding per rectum
- Low appetite
- Weight loss
- Vomiting in case of obstruction
- Memory issues in case of brain mets
- Cirrhosis when liver spread
- Others

It is the advance cachexic stage which makes him extreme low levels of appetite. In my clinic, I do recommend a Ryle's tube insertion for feeding support or even enterostomy tube in difficult cases.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
