What Causes Frequent Charley Horse Pain In The Body?

I am a 50 yr old female. I have been getting Charlie horses all over my body quite frequently. I have gone to my family doctor and she has done a complete chemical profile and said everything was great. These Charlie horses are very debilitating to the point that I can t move sometimes for an hour or so and the pain is excruciating. My doctor has no answer for me. On my own I have taken Potassium and Magnesium and it somewhat helps but not completely. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Electrolytes abnormalities can cause muscle cramps which is the reason for the testing but if these are normal then other causes would need to be found.

Other possible causes include: (1) liver disease
(2)kidney disease
(3)side effect of medication
(4)neurological condition such as (a) nerve compression (b)ALS (lou gehrig)
(5)diabetic neuropathy- diabetic nerve disease

You may want to consider referral to a neurologist for assessment and treatment.
He or she would be able to determine the likely cause.

I hope this helps
