What Causes Fatigue And Weight Gain While On Levothyroxine?

I m currently on 225 micrograms of Levothyroxin and just had a TSH level come back at 7. This has been going on for years and my Dr can t seem to get it under control. I m always exhausted and recently gained 15 lbs without much diet/activity change. I m 42. Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not usually not to get the desired effects after taking levothyroxine.

Doses greater than 200 mcg/day orally are seldom required. An inadequate response to oral daily doses of 300 mcg/day or greater is rare and may indicate poor compliance, malabsorption, and/or drug interactions.

So I will still advise to increase the dose to 250 mcg and further up to 275 mcg for the desired effects.

If things still do not improve, please talk to your doctor. It would have been helpful if you had mentioned your daily physical activity.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
