What Causes Extreme Tiredness In A Patient With Brainstem Stroke?

My doctors have just determined that I suffered a brainstem stroke within the last six months. I am on oxygen support at home as it is difficult for me to breathe, hence I remain exhausted all the time. My question relates to the fact that I want to SLEEP all the time. My next doctor s appointment is in two months. Should I be concerned about my constant desire to sleep? Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the extreme tiredness with excess sleeping sensation feeling may be in concern with various possible issues as:
- Retention of carbon dioxide due to hypoventilation
- Damage to certain respiratory centers of the brain
- Metabolic disturbances as respiratory acidosis
- Imbalance with neuro-chemical transmitters of neurons
- Others

It may or may not be in concern with brain stem stroke to be commented without further details.

However, if any of the reports are available with you to share with me during follow up discussion, it would be a better interaction.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
