What Causes Excessive Weight Gain And Hunger In A Teenager?

For the past three years my daughter, age 17, has been gaining weight, hungry all the time, always tired, depressed and losing hair. I have Hashimotos thyroid and have been on Levothyroxine for 30 years. I suspected that my daughter also has Hashimotos but her TSH levels are within normal range. I suggested her pediatrician order anti-tpo levels and they came back over 700. So, yes, she has Hashimotos. Because it is not affecting her TSH level, they will not treat her symptoms. What should we do?

Hi,

It's very right that we don't treat thyroid problems if it is not affecting TSH.

However, if she has symptoms and her antibodies are positive, I would suggest to repeat her. Full thyroid tests (T3, T4 and TSH) in sometimes if they are all normal then no need to treat.

Meanwhile, it's important to see her in details if there can be any other problem which could explain her symptoms like depression or anemia etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
