What Causes Excessive Daytime Sweating?

Hello. For about a year now whenever I take a nap, I wake up drenched in sweat to the point that my clothes are damp. I also usually have a headache and it is always a very deep sleep (usually 1-2 hours). However, when I go to bed at night this does not happen. It is only when I take naps (which tends to be late afternoon). I have the AC on and am wearing shorts and a t-shirt! I just can t seem to figure it out. Please help! Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I have read your query and got that you are suffering from hyperhidrosis which is the term used for excessive sweating. It is of two types primary and secondary.

Primary hyperhidrosis is due to unknown reason with sweating in feet, hands, face and head. It is commonly seen in childhood. Secondary hyperhidrosis is due to underlying pathology of the heart, adrenals, hyperthyroidism, etc. It is commonly seen in adulthood.

Secondary hyperhidrosis should be investigated for the cause by examining the heart, adrenals, thyroid, etc. Adrenal gland disorders and hyperthyroidism is the common cause for excessive sweating. Consult the doctor and discuss regarding the same for further management.

Treatment options are anti-cholinergics which controls the action of acetylcholine on their receptors in sweat glands. Surgery is the tertiary option, if the symptoms persists.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
