What Causes Elevation In BP Levels And Anxiety After Discontinuing Metoprolol?
I started taking metoprolol tartrate 2 days ago. Took one dose at 25 mg. and 2 doses of 12.5 mg. I am now reading that I will have to be weaned off of this medication. I also have high anxiety. I went to the emergency room and they found my BP to be very high 165/86 (it is usually 120/70) I was prescribed this drug stating it will help with the anxiety as well as the fast heart rate and high blood pressure. Can I stop taking this medicine? What are the alternatives? I also have severe COPD.
Due to sudden discontinuance of Metoprolol. Rebound high BP and anxiety are important side effects if Metoprolol is stopped suddenly. Hence, its dose should be gradually reduced over several days or week. Moreover, had I been your treating doctor I would not have advised Metoprolol because it may cause difficulty in breathing in patients suffering from COPD. I would suggest amlodipine or lisinopril which are equally effective alternative in controlling your high BP.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
