What Causes Elevated Blood Pressure In An Elderly Person?

My 92 year old mother says she is feeling fine. We are taking her blood pressure now and then because she was in the hospital just last week with SVT that corrected itself. This evening she was feeling fine. I took her BP just because and the first reading was 177/70 15 minutes later it is 186/73 and last 190/82.... her regular doctor did not suggest anything but come in in the morning... what do you suggest? Is there something preventative I could do? Aspirin... fluids for low blood but what for high?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello
I really appreciate your concern for your mother.

High blood pressure might be related to
1.age related degenerative changes in heart and blood vessels like atherosclerosis,
2. metabolic disease like diabetes, thyroid disease
3. dyslipidaemia or adverse lipid profile
4. high salt intake
5. stress and anxiety.

I would advise her for a battry of tests like CBC, blood sugar, lipid profile, blood urea and serum creatinine as well as ultrasound and ophthalmoscopy to see for end organ damage.

Meanwhile please follow these guidelines
No salt or salt restricted diet
Low fat diet
yoga and relaxation exercises to allay stress and anxiety.

She may require antihypertensive drugs like amlodipine or diuretic group of drugs like indepamide under medical supervision.

Hope I could answer your question, please feel free to ask for further assistance.
Best wishes
