What Causes Edema Of The Legs With Blood Pressure And Hypothyroidism?
I am a female age 73. Recently I have developed edema of the legs. I got support hose. I work part time and stand quite a bit. My brother passed at 59 from heart failure. Must I wear the stockings always or can I go without when wearing clothing that doesn't cover them? are there tests that should be administered to determine the cause? I take blood pressure medication and hypothyroid medication.
Hi! I read carefully your query and understand your concern. There are many causes for edema of the legs. -One reason is kidney disease. Long time hypertension can cause damage to your kidneys leading to edema in extremities and in advanced stage in all over the body. I suggest you to do a urine test measuring the albumina.A high level of Albumina in your urine confirm the kidney damage. -Another reason can be Hypothyroidism and you should do a thyroid report to see if your treatment is appropriate and if your thyroid hormones level is normal. If you had done this test lately and it was normal than we can exclude this possibility. -Heart failure is another reason of legs edema. If you never had heart problems this option is less probably.I suggest to consult a cardiologist,he can perform a heart ultrasound to see how it is working and to exclude heart failure. -If your heart ,kidneys and thyroid report are OK,than it can be a postural edema due to standing up for long hours during the day.
Hope I was able to help you. Take care Dr.Rovena
