What Causes Dry Heaving Along With Irregular Heartbeats?

I have a friend, aged 48, who was just checked by paramedics for severe low back pain. He felt that he had to vomit, but it was dry heaving. Paramedics checked him and by that point he said he felt better and they noted he was very dehydrated, which is a problem he often experiences. Additionally, he occasionally develops an irregular heartbeat which can last up to 8 hours. He s being treated by a cardiologist, but in my opinion, not very well. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There are different types of irregular heartbeats, one of the most common is atrial fibrillation. There are other causes and types as well.

If he has heart failure then his fluid intake may be restricted and this may be contributing to his dehydration.

He may need to discuss his allowed fluid intake with his cardiologist to make sure that he receives enough.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
