Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
This evening I suddenly felt light headed and had pressure in the middle of my chest about 4-5 inches below my throat. I checked my blood pressure several times with a blood pressure cuff. The readings were in the range of 78-90 over 48-60. My pulse was in the 140-150 range. The condition lasted about 20 minutes. I gradually felt better and my blood pressure and pulse slowly returned to normal. I am a 77 year old male, slightly overweight and in good health. I take no medications. My blood pressure is usually about 135-140 over about 70 with a pulse of 68-75. I have felt this condition several times before, but not as severe and for shorter periods. On one occasion I was able to check my pulse, It was 104 over something. My personal physician ordered a stress test which identified no problem. What could be causing this condition?
Hello and thank you for asking to HCM. As I can read from your question, the symptoms and signs that you refer could be caused by serius heart disease. The values of blood pressure and heart rate that you measured while you were having pressure on your chest are not normal and should suggest an urgent evaluation in the emergency room (blood test, ECG and heart-ultrasound if avaiable). The fact that you have a negative stress test can't rule out heart disease (in particular coronary disease), especially if you don't have any risk factor (diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia). I recommend you to go to the emergency department if you feel againg pressure or pain in the chest. Otherwise, I would recommend a cardiological evaluation within 1 week. I hope to have answered to your question. Regards, Dr. Naibo E.
