What Causes Discomfort At The Back Of The Leg While Treating Spinal Arthritis?

I have arthritis of the spine. A few weeks ago I was in an auto accident where I was rear ended. Yesterday I was bending over for a while doing some work and having difficulty with the back of my legs and kept having to adjust my position to complete my task. Also, I kept running out of breath and energy after only a few minutes and had to take a break and straighten up for a few minutes before trying to return to complete my task. Finally, after about 30 minutes I finished the task and as I tried to stand erect I had a very strange and painful experience. It felt as if my whole inner core of my body was frozen and drawn very tight making it difficult to breath and move. It did not feel like sore muscles. I rested in a fully reclined position for about a hour and it finally went away. Any thoughts on what this could have been or if I should be concerned. Your information would be appreciated.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The acute episode of discomfort at the back of the leg after some sort of bending work indicate muscle or ligament pull, strain or sprain rather than spinal cord related issue. Following would be best measures to handle the condition:
- Adaptations of particular postures to avoid stretching of concerned leg while keeping ambulatory
- Gradual assisted physiotherapy to get the previous tone of the muscle back for functioning
- Local application of analgesic spray or ointment
- Analgesic medications as per the need via pain score of above 4 of 10 or work discomfort
- Control of blood sugar and body weight

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
