What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing And Pain In The Esophagus?

For the past several years I have had a problem with swallowing certain foods(rice, breads). This happens very infrequently. It will feel as a pain in my esophagus, like a severe muscle spasm. I have even blacked out a couple of times when this happens. I found out today that my brother has been diagnosed with mysthenia gravis. Could this be a symptom of mysthenia gravis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,my name is dr.Dorina Gurabardhi.
Welcome to HCM.
One of the common causes of your symptoms is gastroesophageal reflux. It can cause narrowing of the lower esophagus.
To confirm the diagnosis you should do an endoscopy.
Meanwhile, some advices that I can give to you are:
-take antacids to reduce stomach acid
-try to eat liquid diet
-eat in smaller portions
-avoid food or beverage that can trigger the symptoms like alcohol, caffeine.
-avoid smoking

Hope my answer was helpful.
If you have any other questions feel free to contact me again.
Kind regards!
