General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Diabetes is a disease which is caused due to insufficient secretion of insulin or due to defective in insulin action. This will lead to increased circulating glucose in blood.

Although there are several risk factors for development of diabetes like family history and obesity, it is not necessary that it needs to be present. Diabetes cannot be cured but it can be controlled by following measures:
1. Antidiabetic medications
2. Diet
3. Exercise for 20 to 30 minutes per day.
4. Control of emotions by practicing meditation.

Diabetic diet is prescribed in the form of low carbohydrate diet which consists of complex carbohydrates and more of dietary fibres. Consumption of refined sugars needs to be completely avoided.

It is essential to get your Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels tested once in 3 months to monitor your diabetes control. You need to adjust your diet and medications accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ashakiran S, General & Family Physician
