What Causes Delayed Periods?

Hi! So I m 23 yrs old and I ve always been irregular since I had my first period, sometimes I have my period twice a month. I ve never been this delayed before, probably the max that I had was 32-36 days. The last period I had was October 5,2016 which lasted for 5 days (my normal flow). Since then, I haven t got my period. Normally I wouldn t panic but this is like 2 months already and it really scares me. So, yes, I did have unprotected sex with my bf but we are using the pull out method. I did try to use a couple of urine tests which all showed negative. I don t know if I got pregnant or maybe it s just me. I ve been feeling nauseaus, the urge to vomit, tired, back pain and sore breasts sometimes, which I ve never felt before since I don t have any symptoms whenever I m about to get my period. I had sex again with my bf a few days back and got this light red bleeding during intercourse. I thought it was my period but still nothing til now. I m pretty scared because this is the first time this had happened to me and I m really seeking for answers. I hope you can help me out and I would like to thank you in advance. :)

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

You are most likely to have a hormonal imbalance, which would result in delayed periods. You mentioned that you always had irregular periods. The common conditions that need to be ruled out would be Thyroid disorders, PCOD etc. I would advise you to see your doctor to get your hormonal profile checked.

To rule out a pregnancy, the best way is by doing serum beta HCG level. This is a blood test offered by majority of the labs. This is a pregnancy hormone and is positive even though a urine pregnancy test may be negative if a woman is pregnant. Kindly see your doctor for this too.

You could go on the oral contraceptive pill which would be helpful to you in 2 ways – it would regularise your periods and also prevent an unwanted pregnancy. Your doctor would take a detailed history from you, check for any contraindications and can suggest the best hormonal contraception to you.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
