What Causes Delayed Periods?

I'm a week and two days late for my period and have take two pregnancy tests and they both came out negative.I had sex tow days before the period and I took the first test the day of my period and exactly six days afterwards. It was protected sex and I've had a history of irregular periods. But up until last year they have stopped the only concern was the usual five days I had dropped to three and they are very heavy. I've might of been a day or two late but never a week.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Your delayed period is not due to pregnancy as you did protected sex two day before the period date. Pregnancy test will give positive result 8 to 10 days after missed period. Your delayed period could be due to hormonal imbalance, ovarian dysfunction, thyroid dysfunction, endeometriosis, adenomyosis, excessive stress, excessive weight gain and loss.

I would suggest to consult the gynecologist and undergo vaginal examination, reproductive and thyroid hormone analysis, USG scan and ovarian follicle study. Specific treatment will depend on the cause. Progesterone pill will help to induce the period. Avoid stress, take healthy diet, drink plenty of water and do regular exercise.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
