What Causes Delayed Periods?

The last time I had sex was about a month and a half ago and we didn t use a condom but he didn t cum inside of me but I took plan B the next morning anyway. I got my period about a week later and I know it wasn t spotting because it was pretty heavy which is normal for me. My period is late this month, should I be concerned?

Hi Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As you had your periods after having unsafe sex, you are not pregnant. Most probably your period are delayed.
A plan B pill prevents pregnancy by inhibiting implantation of fertilized egg on to uterus. It is 95% successful if taken within 24 hours of having sex. So chances of pregnancy are very less.
Delayed period after intake of plan B pill is a common problem. It is known side effect due to high dose of hormone levogesterol contained in the pill. Therefore your period could be delayed for next one or two cycles.
One should never use emergency pill as regular method of contraception. Use condoms or regular contraceptive pills to prevent pregnancy in future. Frequent intake of emergency contraceptive pills can cause serious problems like irregular periods, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome & even infertility.

If your period doesn't occur even after 2 week delay,Consult a gynaecologist

Yes Plan B pill intake could cause irregular periods. The first time you had light bleeding or spotting must be breakthrough bleeding. This type of bleeding normally occurs after intake of emergency contraceptive pill or a plan B pill. There is nothing much to be concerned about.
Delayed periods are common side effect of a plan B pill, it is known side effect of the pill. So your periods could be delayed for 1 or more cycles.
Use condom or regular contraceptive pill as method of contraception in future. Taking more emergency contraceptive pills can cause problems like irregular periods, ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome & even infertility.

You should also do a pregnancy test to rule-out possibility of getting pregnant

For more queries consult a gynaecologist
