Hi,

As you are regretting not using birth control this time, I am sure you will not miss using it next time. So I am not going into details about advantages of birth control measures when you are not planning pregnancy.

However, I think you do not have enough information regarding emergency contraceptive pill. Emergency contraceptive pill (I pill, Plan B) is a pill that is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy. The pill works best if it is taken as soon as after intercourse. Its efficacy decreases as the time passes. It might not be effective at all if not taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse. So taking that pill now, after a week of unprotected sexual intercourse is not advisable.

Now what you can do is take a home pregnancy test. You can purchase a home pregnancy test kit available over the counter at any medical or super store. Read the instructions carefully before using the kit. Your girlfriend will have to urinate on the indicator area of the pregnancy test strip and wait for 5-10 minutes. The indicator area may show (+) or (-) sign which indicates positive or negative test, respectively.

If the test is negative, she just have to wait for the menstruation. If it is positive, then she might have to consult a gynecologist to discuss further options.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. I wish things turn out well for both of you.

Best regards,
Dr. Viraj Shah
