What Causes Delay In Period And Milky Discharge?

Hello, I am 24 years old, I was on birth control for 6 years and stopped taking it on Wednesday the 20th of August and I was about 4 days into my new pack. I started my period on the 25th of August and it was a completely normal period. I have a 28 day cycle so I should have started my period on the 22nd of September but have had no signs of starting. I have had very little cramping the past week that last for about 5 minutes here and there but no bleeding. I ve taken 4 pregnancy tests and they have all come back negative. Not sure if I could be pregnant or if this is just my cycle being thrown off from ending birth control last month? Any suggestions what could be going on. Also during the period I was suppose to be ovulating I noticed slightly clearish/milky discharge on a daily bases and also was having unprotected sex on an every other day basis.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. I can advise two things one of which might work for you. First, if home pregnancy tests are coming negative, it might be the case that you are probably taking it early. Go for a blood test for pregnancy which is more reliable and gives results in about a week of conceiving. If this comes negative, then you are not pregnant.

Secondly, sometimes after taking birth control pills for a log time, the body needs time to adjust to hormone production and regulation on its own and it may take up to 3 months to get back on the regular cycles. This situation is called, Post-Pill Amenorrhea. Thus, you can be neither pregnant nor have menstrual cycles for 3 months and still you may have no disorder at all.

If you do not get periods after 3 months of stopping the pill, then consulting a gynecologist and going for further investigations to reach the underlying cause is important.

I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Let me know if you have follow up questions.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
