I had a colonoscopy 8 yrs. ago. A polyp was removed. My paperwork stated I should come back in 10 years. Since Jan. I have had dark spotting from the vagina (not everyday) in which I checked with a gynocologist in which all tests came back negative ( I had a hysterectomy and bladder lift 4 years ago). She diagnosed me with vaginal atrophy ( I am 65 years old). I then decided to see the dr. who did my colonoscopy. He questioned why I did not come back in 5 years, I said paperwork said 10 yrs. He is scheduling me with a colonoscopy this week. I am scared this spotting could be colon cancer in which I will feel terrible I didn t get back for a test at 5 yrs. This doctor also said I could have a vaginal fistula. Can you enlighten me with your expertise. Thank you. This has been such a scary thing. Looking forward to retirement but now here I am.
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service. I reviewed your query and here is my advice. I think the spotting comes from atrophy since gynaecologist examined you. The fistula has smelly discharge and causes infection. In case of colon cancer a person may experience difficulties in passing a bowel movement and blood in stools. Hope your colonoscopy will come clear.
Hope I have answered the question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
