What Causes Cyst With Discharge On Coccyx?

Hi! Ok this is probably going to sound disgusting but yesterday I noticed that when i sat down my butt would hurt and I thought I had just hurt or bruised my tailbone but just now I decided to take a look and noticed that when I squeezed my cheeks together, right below where my crack started it would ooze out a thin, reddish liquid.. I ve done some research and I think it s a pilordial(spelling?) cyst.. But should I see a doctor or not??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for posting your query.
I appreciate your concern for the discharging cyst on the coccyx.

The features described are suggestive of an infected pilonidal sinus.

A pilonidal sinus is a small pit that occurs at the bottom of the coccyx that can become infected and filled with pus (abscess).
Pilonidal abscesses look like a boil at the bottom of the coccyx, just above the crack of the buttocks.

You are advised to consult a surgeon for proper examination and the treatment which may involve the incision and drainage of the sinus, removing the hair follicles, and packing the cavity with gauze.
This surgical procedure is done under local anaesthesia.
The cyst has to be excised completely to prevent the recurrence.

Hope this answers your query.
Take care.
