What Causes Cough And Blood In Phlegm?

my name is Linda. my boyfriend has smoked at least a pack a day for almost 40 years. just recently he developed a cough that produces a brown mucus. he used to have one good cough in the morning but it has become much more frequent and occasionally with some blood. im concerned that he may have something bad going on in his lungs. what are some early signs of trouble?

Hello Linda. I have read through your question and can understand your concern. You are not wrong in being concerned. Blood in phlegm along with a history of excessive smoking is definitely a red flag. I would suggest you to get his CT chest done as soon as possible. Some other symptoms of carcinoma are unexplained fever and weight loss. It would advise you to discuss this with your physician. A timely intervention is the key to proper treatment.
