What Causes Continuous Vomiting, Frequent Bowel Movement And Black Stool?

Hi! My father is just a new dialysis patient. His session was stopped half of the normal time because of continuous movement making the dialysis machine to stop the process every 10 minutes. He was scheduled the next day for a graft access because the catheter inserted on his neck was infected already. They immediately removed the catheter the same day because he was chilling during that session. The next day the surgeon aborted the graft access and just reinserted the catheter on the other side. Now our problem is he is continuously vomiting and have frequent bowel movement with black tar stool. Is that normal?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The commonest causes of new symptoms are:
- Black tarry stools means there is bleeding somewhere in upper intestinal tract, commonest being at stomach or duodenal ulceration
- During dialysis blood thinners need to be given and this can cause bleeding
- Hematological causes like low platelets, bleeding or clotting disorders

Hence I would advise him the following:
- Get into the hospital
- Management of bleeding, fluid and electrolyte balance under the supervision of a Specialist as kidney are not working properly needing the dialysis
- Full investigations related to kidney and liver functions, bleeding time, clotting time, prothrombine time
- May need urgent upper GI Endoscopy to see for bleeding areas and can be treated according to the cause found
- Blood transfusion if required
- Symptomatic and supportive treatment as would be advise by a panel of treating doctors

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
