What Causes Constipation And Brown Vomit?

My uncle is 92 and on dialysis. 3 weeks ago he went to the ER and was diagnosed with diverticulosis. They sent him home with antibiotics. Last night he called 911 and was taken back to the hospital. He has been constipated for approx. 4 days. They did CT scan. The ER doctor said the diverticulitis didn t look too bad but that he was constipated which I knew. He is in the hospital, pain similar to diverticulosis and vomiting brown. I am concerned about a blockage as this is what it sounds like yet they are treating him with stool softeners (a little late for that) enemas and pills. He cannot drink a lot of water due to the kidney dialysis so I am truly concerned about this constipation which sounds like a blockage to me and vomiting brown. My brother lives by him but is out of the country and I am on the east coast and he on the west. They also didn t restrict his diet i.e. liquid diet for the diverticulosis. Not sure if eating more food is the best thing to do at this point. Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

Constipation in this age is common and usually there is no serious underlying cause and should be treated with dietary changes and laxatives. If there is no improvement then he should do more specific tests including colonoscopy.
he needs to increase fiber intake. Good fiber sources include bran and other whole grains found in cereals, breads, and brown rice, vegetables such as brussels sprouts, carrots, and asparagus, Fresh fruits, or dried fruits such as raisins, apricots, and prunes Beans.

Second, you may at times need to try a laxative such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, Milk of Magnesia, or glycerin suppositories. If there wont be improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry and food allergy testing.
In some cases it may be also sign of tumors so it should be ruled out if symptoms persist.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
