Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a 2 year old daughter who suffers from chronic constipation. She gets a daily dose of miralax (full dose). The only days that she dose not get the miralax is if she is having frequent stools before. This happened 2 days ago. She had loose very sticky stools all day, so she did not get her miralax. By the next morning she was crying that she was not able to pass any stools. She got her dose of miralax at 8 am. She did not have a bowl movement until 6:30 pm even though she was straining to go all day. By the time she was able to pass it, it was so large that it make her bleed. This is not the first time this has happened. I will be calling her ped as soon as they open but as a worried mom I hate to wait when my kids are involved. What could cause this to happen on such a regular basis?
Constipation among children is very common and it is not a matter of great concern. Simple dietary changes and increase in water intake can solve the problem.
Please include high fiber fruits and green leafy vegetables in her diet. Avoid cow milk as sometimes it can be a cause for constipation. Also encourage your child to sit on the toilet for 5 to 10 minutes at least once a day.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
