What Causes Choking Either While Eating Or Drinking?

I have had a choking problem for about 8 years, this has happened about 14 times, either when I am eating or drinking or involved in neither of the actions. I have had a video swallow test and an endoscopy check but nothing has been found. I get no warning when this happens but when it does happen I just can t breath at all. I live on my own and if it happens there I have to get a bottle and squeeze it between a wall and just above my stomach. I am always highly relieved when I can clear my breathing airway but it sometimes takes a while before I succeed in Spain recently I managed to get a lady to grab me around the waste and apply pressure. It happens 2 or 3times a year

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are experiencing choking either while eating or drinking which could be due to granular pharyngitis. It could be due to formation of lump, gastroesophageal reflux disease and contraction of muscle sphincters. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles 2-3 times a day. Consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order test like blood test , throat swab test , endoscopy and CT scan. From diagnostic studies exact diagnosis can be made out. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics course, anti inflammatory medications or refer you to gastroenterologist. You should avoid heavy and spicy food specially at night and eat small and frequent meals. You should do betadine gargles as well.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
