What Causes Chills, Tremors, Cold Hands And Feet?

My 24 yr old son suddenly got very chilled, shaky, started in his legs and moved up his body. No fever. Hands and feet are very cold to the touch (he is 270 lbs and always warm). One foot and one hand got numbness in them. He takes 100 mg Welbutrin each morning, and forgot this morning. Could that cause these symptoms this quickly?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Wellbutrin contains bupropion which belongs to the class of medications known as norepinephrine dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs) is used to depression. This drug adjusts the levels of certain neurotransmitters in your brain that are responsible for controlling your mood, level of alertness and other functions. If you suddenly stop taking this medication abruptly without tapering dosage, you may experience the unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.

Common withdrawal symptoms are chills, fever, stuffy nose, nausea, dizziness, sweating, vivid dreams, agitation, restlessness, insomia, uncontrolled jerking movements of arms and legs, trembling or shaking, tremors and restless legs syndrome, difficulty balancing, increased sensitivity to cold, cold feet, hands or body, freezing of hands and feet etc. These symptoms may begin immediately after you stop using Wellbutrin or several days after the last time you used your medication. They can last from a few days to several weeks or longer.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
