What Causes Chills, Excessive Sweating And Unexplained Weight Loss?

My husband lost 30 lbs in two months. He is having chills and sweats and then clammy. He is also fatigued. He has a chest x-ray and several blood tests. A sputum test showed a bacterial infection. He was treated with antiobiotics a couple weeks back. He is still having symptoms. What should he be checked for?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Fever and weight loss for two months need proper detailed work up. The causes are many. These may include chronic infection like tuberculosis, Hiv, infective endocarditis etc.

Other causes include autoimmune diseases like SLE, sarcoidosis etc. Some times serious causes like cancer may also present this way. So a detailed evaluation is needed. It's hard to say anything at the moment. Good luck.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Mahboob Ur Rahman , General & Family Physician
