What Causes Burning/itching Sensation Outside The Vaginal Opening?

I started having burning and itching sensation on the skin just outside my vaginal opening about 3 days ago. I have tried not to scratch and only wear cotton underwear. My vaginal discharge is a little heavier than normal and is very thick creamy white. It does not resemble cottage cheese though and there is not an odor. I shave down there completely and shaved the day before I noticed the burning. My skin of the labia minora is stretched and a darker color since having children. Kind of looks wrinkled up towards the opening. When I stretched the skin out to see if I cut myself, I didn t notice a cut but it looks like a few of my hair follicles are inflamed. I have had the same sex partner for the last year. I am just curious if this could be a yeast infection that has irritated the surrounding skin due to an abrasion from shaving or if it may be genital warts. Nothing looks like warts though but it is hard to see with a mirror. I am going to see my gyn but can t get an appointment very soon. Just wanting to ease my mind on the possibilities. Thank you.

Hallow Dear,

The description of your symptoms and discharge suggest the possibility of vaginitis - mostly fungal (yeast) or Trichomonal. Both these conditions do cause white discharge from vagina with immense itching outside the vagina and even burning after urination.

However, since you mention that the picture is not like a cheese, possibility of Trichomonal vaginitis stands first in the list of differential diagnosis. Please get the diagnosis confirmed from your Gynaecologist.

Trichomoniasis can be effectively treated with Metronidazole while anti-fungal ointments or vaginal pessaries can treat fungal infection. It is advisable to have Lactobacilli vaginal ovules or perineal washes to prevent recurrence and have effective cure. Perineal wash like Lactacyd may be used.

These infections are usually transmitted sexually; however, unhygienic commode is also a very common cause of fungal infection. So to avoid recurrence of the infections, it is imperative that both the sexual partners are treated simultaneously. Along with the medical treatment, please practise the following instructions. These should be followed by both the partners:

1. Complete sexual abstinence till both of you are declared completely cured.
2. Shave the private parts clean. If your perineal wound does not allow you shaving, you may clip the hair flush.
3. Boil the underwear.
4. Use panty liners (for you).
5. Clip the nails short. If possible avoid scratching with nails. You may use gauze for the purpose. Wipe only before backwards to avoid infections from the bowel.
6. Take B-complex capsules.
7. Hygienic toilet habits.

You can take care of the cut on your perineum, you may apply Povidon Iodine locally.

I hope this helps you.
