What Causes Bruising On Elbows?

Hi I haven t done anything to harm myself in any way but last week I noticed a bruise on both sides of my elbow and the bruises don t hurt or anything but they seem to get darker. Before they were just a light shade of black but now they are getting black and purple. I would just like to know why this is happening to me.

Hello,

The following are few causes of bruises:
1) Injury
2) Having cancer or liver disease
3) Having family members who bruise easily
4) Taking medications to thin blood or stop clotting, such as aspirin or blood thinners
5) Take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief regularly, including Ibuprofen (Advil) or Naproxen (Aleve)
6) Having a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia, von Willebrand disease or another blood clotting condition
7) Experiencing a low blood platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
8) Having a vitamin C or vitamin K deficiency.

As the bruise gets older, it becomes purple and black and then slowly fades away. If you keep bruising in the similar way, you need to go to a physician for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
