What Causes Breathing Difficulty Upon Walking While Suffering From COPD?
Our 87yr old mother has COPD. She recently was hospitalized with pneumonia and has been home on intermittent O2 (2L) for about 4wks. She is SOB with walking and activities. She still has home PT and home nursing just DC d her. Her finger oxcimeter says she is 94-97%, but it can be 88% on 2L. Her cardiologist is out till Jan 3 and her pulmonologist appt is in a month. Her legs are weak ( she only weighs 100#). Does she need to see someone about her difficulty breathing?
As the age of your mother is 87 with short breath, there can be associated cardiac disorder responsible for the added effect over the weak lung caused by pneumonia.
She must be addressed to nearby physician without waiting for her cardiologist or pulmonologist for best primary care and help. Till that time, deep breathing exercises with semi reclining position preference would help her great.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
General & Family Physician
