Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father age is 90 years. He has prostrate problem along with hypertension and vertigo. Recently he had a bout of urine infection for last 3-4 months. Now he is passing stool while urinating. We have to use sanitary pad for that.According to him there is no stomach pain nor inclination for passing stool. Still he passes stool while urinating that too in large amt. What is the reason ?
The loss of stool unintentionally is called stool incontinence.
There are different possible causes: (1) spinal cord trauma (2)inflammatory bowel disease (3)constipation with overflow of surrounding stool (4)lactose intolerance (5)infection of the bowel (6)irritable bowel syndrome
To find out the cause, he would need a stool sample to be send to the lab to check for infection. If there is a history of constipation, then this should be treated to prevent the overflow
Lactose intolerance can be also be assessed.
His doctor can determine the likely cause and initiate treatment.
I hope this helps
