What Causes Body Pain And Inflammation Of Hands And Ankles While Suffering From Inflammatory Arthritis?

I have been diagnosed with Inflammatory arthritis...severe inflammation in hands and fingers, elbows, ankles. I have been prescribed 5 mg of Prednisone and 6 tablets of Methotrexate 2.5 mg each once per week. Previously, I had polymyalgia. At that time, my Sed Rate was 46 & CRP was elevated too! My Sed Rate & CRP were normal in April. Would this be an adequate medication regime to help the pain, aches & fatigue? I still experience aches, pain & fatigue every day although it is somewhat better. Thank you. Jeanne

Hello,

Your symptoms suggest you have been suffering from any one of the following:
1) Rheumatoid arthritis
2) Reactive arthritis
3) Osteoarthritis
4) Viral polyarthritis
5) Psoriatic arthritis
6) Polymyalgia rheumatica
7) arthritis of inflammatory bowel disease

You are most probably suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The treatment is as follows:
1) Generally RA factor is checked in blood and in most of the cases this is positive
2) Medications are DMARDs or disease modifying rheumatic drugs
a) Conventional DMARDs like Methotrexate, Leflunomide, Hydroxychlorquine, Sulfasalazine
3) NSAIDs like ibuprofen and Naproxen sodium
4) Steroids
As your ESR and CRP are elevated, it is acute phase arthritis and steroids are essential to be administered. Methotrexate decreases the progression of disease. Hydroxychlorquine can be added to your prescription.
5) your prescribed medicines are to be taken regularly without fail inorder to prevent complications like joint deformities.
6) Regular follow ups are very important.
7) Slowly the symptoms would come down please stick to your medication.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
