What Causes Blurred Vision And Leg Cramps In A Type 2 Diabetic Patient?

Hello. I m a 59 year old African American woman. I was recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I was placed on Metformin (1000 mg) and Glipizide (5 mg). I have blurred vision and have developed these cramps in my legs. My toes twitch at night and all during the day I feel like I m getting ready to get a cramp in my left thigh joint or in my calves. It feels as though something is attacking my nerves. I have a tightening across my back out into my arms - both of them. I can t reach behind me to unfasten my bra because I begin to cramp up in my arms. Can you tell me whether I should seek a specialist? I don t know what kind to see. I m also on Triam/HCTZ for hypertension and edema. I take Vitamin D, B12, magnesium. Can you give some advice?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Uncontrolled diabetes can damage your nerves and eyes and subsequently leads to conditions like peripheral neuropathy and retinopathy respectively and cause lower limb pain and visual problems.

Diabetes control is the key and makes sure that your sugars are well controlled.

Additional investigations like retinoscopy and nerve conduction study are needed. You can consult a general physician for expert opinion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
