What Causes Blood In Stool?

I think I am having blood in my stool. No black tarry stool but after my stool sits in the bowel I see what I think is blood kind of separating from the stool. It does kind of have a reddish tint. Could this be blood or just the stool breaking down? Kind of a dumb question I guess.
