What Causes Blood Clot In Throat After Tonsillectomy?

Hi. I am in hospital with my little girl (5 years old) who developed a blood clot after 7 days of having a tonsillectomy. She started bleeding on day 7 evening and vomited all out in the morning when we realised and rushed her to hospital. The doctors said the blood clot was already formed (quite large) when we arrived. She since stopped all bleeding but the large clot is sitting on the left tonsil bottom close to the tongue. My question: will the clot go away by itself and, is there a risk that it will start to bleed again? I just need a general second opinion

Hello,

The blood clot formed due to tonsillectomy surgery. Formation of blood clot has stopped the bleeding from raw area.

The blood clot should not be disturbed since its removal may lead to fresh bleeding.

If the bleeding still continues, platelet count and coagulation tests - prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) should be done.

I suggest you to consult your treating doctor for prescription of these investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri
