What Causes Bleeding, pain And Swelling Of Left Breast?

Hi, I have been having bleeding and pushing discharge from my left breast (the nipple and the areola). My dermatologist believes it is eczema and has prescribed a topical steroid. Though it has worked to stop the discharge, the pain and swelling still exists. I am afraid that I may be treating the symptom only but the underlying issue is still going on. Can the topical steroid mask the real issue? Also descriptions I have read of breast eczema do not match my challenge. Any wisdom would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

Bleeding, pain and swelling in the breast can have several potential causes, and it is essential to have a medical evaluation to determine the underlying issue. While eczema can cause itching and discharge from the nipple, it is not typically associated with bleeding, pain, or swelling. Other potential causes of these symptoms include:
* Infection: Breast infections, also known as mastitis, can cause swelling, redness, pain, and discharge from the nipple. The infection can be bacterial or fungal and can occur in women who are breastfeeding or not.
* Breast cancer: While breast cancer is not the most common cause of these symptoms, it is essential to have it ruled out, especially if you have a family history of breast cancer.
* Fibroadenoma: These are noncancerous breast lumps that can cause pain and swelling.
* Trauma: Any injury or trauma to the breast can cause pain, swelling, and bleeding.

It is essential to see a doctor who can perform a thorough examination and recommend appropriate tests or imaging to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. While topical steroids can help with eczema symptoms, they will not address underlying issues such as an infection or breast lump.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Based on the symptoms you have described, it is important to seek medical attention from a healthcare provider as soon as possible. Bleeding, pain and swelling of the breast can be caused by a variety of underlying conditions, some of which may be serious.

Breast eczema is a possible cause of these symptoms, but other conditions such as breast cancer, Paget's disease of the breast, or an abscess can also cause similar symptoms. It is important to have a thorough examination and diagnostic tests such as a mammogram, ultrasound, or biopsy to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

While topical steroids may provide temporary relief of symptoms, they are not a cure for underlying conditions and may mask the real issue. It is important to follow your healthcare provider's instructions for any medication or treatment recommendations and attend all scheduled appointments for your condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
