What Causes Blackness Of Tongue On Waking Up?

I vomit dinner last night, had abdominal pain, fatigue could not stay awake. Woke up with my tongue all black (able to brush off). First stool was dark black, next stool dark green. Still have queasy stomachache. Concern waking up with my tongue black.

Hi. thank you for writing to HCM.

The blackish discolouration of the tongue when you get up is suggestive of bleeding somewhere in the upper digestive tract ( stomach or esophagus). Blood mixes with acid in the stomach and forms acid hematin and this can cause vomiting and stomach pain.

The black stools are also indicative of upper GI bleeding. It is therefore recommended that you see a gastroenterologist or visit the ER for an evaluation. An upper GI endoscopy may be necessary in addition to blood and liver function tests.
