What Causes Anxiety, Depression And Mood Swings?

lately, Ive been having really bad mood swings, anxiety, and feel somewhat depressed for no apparent reason. I also have little to no sex drive but I m very attracted to my boyfriend of 2.5 years. Could this be from my birth control? I am 22 and have been on it since I was 16 due to severe cramps and acne. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Birth control pill contains both estrogen and progesterone or progesterone only that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses and in the treatment of various menstrual abnormalities like irregular periods, prolonged periods or heavy bleeding during periods, acnes etc. But like other medications this medication has some side effects of its own. It may cause anxiety, mood swings, depression, restlessness, nervousness, changes in sexual drive, breast enlargement and tender, headache, sweating, easily bruising, impaired wound healing, spotting or breakthrough bleeding between periods, vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding and many more. Most of these side effects are mild as well as self limiting and usually go away over time. But if these side effects persist for long or bother you then you should consult your doctor first for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
