What Causes Anxiety After Undergoing Surgery For Ovary Removal?

I had a laparascopic surgery on Monday. I had a cyst on my ovary and they were going to remove the cyst but ended up removing the ovary (I still have one left), the cyst and seperating some of the organs that had fused together. My doctor prescribed me valium to take the edge of the anxiety I am feeling. I am also on Effexor 225 mg s daily. I am feeling very teary and emotional and am not sure how long it will last. I feel so miserable. Is all of this normal?

Psychiatrist 's  Response
hi..thanks for writing..i have understood your concern..

the depression and anxiety are very common after women undergo any gynecological surgery..there is a inner feeling of losing their capability as a woman.though this feeling is not conscious, they are not able to understand the symptoms and ruminate about their feelings and try to find out the cause of symptoms..but what they find is failure..

you are on effexor 225, that is enough dose for it..for how long you have been taking it?if you are taking it for more than 2 months then the drug shud be changed..

there are other antidepressant drugs available from different class..along with that if you are very much anxious then i would give [if i would be your treating doctor] you anxiolytics in low dose..

consult a psychiatrist and tell him details about your symptoms and how it has started...he will guide you through treatment strategy and possibly change the medication...keep in mind that you shud have sound sleep at night for at least 7 hours..if you are not sleeping well you shud tell to your psychiatrist..

i hope this advice will be helpful to you..best of luck..
