What Causes An Itchy Rash On The Arm While On Amoxicillin?

I am on Amox-Clav and Doxycycline for cellulitis for a cat scratch on my left arm. Originally I was on Cephalexin and then Amoxicillin, but developed a major rash on my arm and went to ER. I was then put on Amox-Clav along with Doxycycline. Swelling is going down somewhat and there are patches of normal skin color on my elbow, but I m still itching beyond belief. I was in the hospital for two nights. Is there a way to tell if the discoloration is an allergy to one of the medications? Should I go back to ER tomorrow?

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it still seems that you had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic given to you even though your antibiotic has been changed and leading to itchy urticaria or itching..
It is one of the common presentation of allergy to antibiotic that leads to rashes and itching..
Many a times when the reaction is severe it cannot resolve immediately after taking anti allergics and needs a longer course of anti allergics as well as at times oral steroids can also be given..
You should also immediately stop taking the antibiotics and consult your treating physician and get evaluated and he can give you injectable steroid to relieve the symptoms faster..
You can also be advised to apply steroid ointment over the rashes..
Doing cool compresses and applying Calamine lotion can also help..
