What Causes Aggressive Behaviour While On Trazodone And Duloxetine?

I have a 20 year old grandson who is a special needs child about age 6 level of ability. He is on Trazodone 100mg for extreme agitation prn with Duloxetine 30 mg and Adderall 30 mg. He had another outburst that required police to help my daughter take him to hospital. He can t get appt to see psychiatrist until April 21st. They gave him a single dose of Ativan 1mg in ER. He was less aggressive and he came home. He is now escalating again so his mother is giving him the Trazodone for tonight. My concern: is there a hidden drug interaction going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Trazodone is an oral anti-depressant, it improves symptoms of depression. Sometimes side effect can cause agitation, insomnia, headache, dry mouth, tiredness or restlessness.

Duloxetine is also used to treat depression, it is a SNRI and helps to restore the balance between serotonin and norepinephrine. This medication may increase the blood pressure so it is important to check whether the blood pressure is normal or not and report to the treating doctor. Side effects are dizziness and lightheadedness.

Get your grandson get a physical check up done, get examined, evaluated and diagnosed. If he is not having depression or anxiety the medications can be stopped or doses altered (reduced). He may need some other medications instead.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
