What Causes Acid Reflux And Pain In The Chest?

Hello, I m having what I think is heartburn , but a little advice would be great, I have had about 5 episodes of really painful heartburn, it will radiate to my back chest , usually have taken a anti-acid and 45 min or so will dissipate. The pain usually comes in waves , only thing I can compare it too is a Charlie horse in your leg, last night it was mostly on right side of chest and back.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

The heartburn you are feeling could be due to hyperacidity issues of your stomach. Acid reflux is one of them.
To determine the right diagnosis, I highly recommend to run upper endoscopy.

For the moment, I advise to:
- have frequent, small meals
- avoid foods/drinks that would aggravate or precipitate the symptoms (e.g. alcohol, coffee, chocolate, citrus, oily/fried, spicy, chilly etc)
- do not lay down immediately after eating
- take antacids after meal and each time you have heartburn
- should start taking PPIs (e.g. omeprazole) in the morning and ranitidine at bedtime, but I recommend to run upper endoscopy first
- increase plain water intake
- do not skip meals, have them regularly
- try to cope with stress

Hope this helps.
