What Causes Abdominal Pain And Intermittent Diarrhea While Having Diverticulitis?

Hi, I am a 56 year old female. I started having very painful cramping and watery diarrhea on and off 2 weeks ago. It starts usually after the evening meal and happens every 3-4 days. The next day my GI system is sensitive but the cramping & diarrhea is mostly gone.I have diverticular disease, a hiatus hernia, a 1.1 cm gallstone and in the past I have had problems with severe acid reflux but that has cleared up now. My appendix was removed 30 years ago. I am post-menopausal with full-on symptoms from that. My thyroid tested normal 5 months ago and my cholesterol is slightly elevated (both HDL and LDL).Could it be stress? I am a Canadian visiting California and so I am trying to avoid going to the doctor. Since the symptoms come and go, I was hoping to wait until I return to Canada in mid-December.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As a first line management you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief.

Consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated. A colonoscopy is required for further assessment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
