What Causes Abdominal Pain And Blood In Stool?

42 year old female, woken in the middle of the night with abdominal pains that felt like really bad menstrual cramps, but they went away within 10 minutes. This morning there was blood in stool, enough to make the water turn pink, and ongoing light pains in my lower tummy. No previous history of these symptoms. Is this serious?
