What Causes Abdominal Distention Along With Severe Pain?

I am a 62 year old woman, weigh 122 lbs. In the last 3 weeks I have been experiencing abdominal distention. It is getting worse. Today when I woke up I look like I m 6 months pregnant. This is getting very painful and uncomfortable. I also am extremely tired all the time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, I really appreciate your concern. The common causes of abdominal distension are usually gas, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and constipation. Other causes could be fibroids, ascites or intra-abdominal bleeding. Less common causes could be cysts, tumors and neoplasms.
If a lady come to my clinic with distended abdomen I would like to ask her about any associated symptoms, including belching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or abdominal pain. I advise you to have USG abdomen done to have definite diagnosis. Consult your physician for further appropriate management.
Hope my answer has solved your query. Take Care.
Thank you.
