What Causes Abdominal Bloating And Nausea Along With Edema In Ankles?

My daughter is 31 years old and has a history of alcoholism.She has had some major life changes in the last year and is improving. She is now working part time and at about the same time she started her job she developed abdominal issues... bloating to her stomach/upper and area (firmness to stomach), slight edema to her ankles (she is not overweight at all), frequent bowel movements, nausea. I am an RN (her mom) and think part is stress related but her stomach this last few days actually feels firm... the ankle edema is minimal. I am wondering about IBS? She has a a dr apt this Wednesday..

Hello. It can be IBS. But primarily bloating is due to gastritis.

1. Do not eat spicy food
2. Take medications for gastritis- pantop/omez/rantac
3. Take little food at frequent intervals. Breakfast around 8am, small snack at 11am, lunch at 1pm, small snack at 4pm and dinner at 8pm
4. Drink plenty of water
5. Do not smoke, take alcohol or tobacco and even excess of coffee and tea
6. Do not take much of stress. Stress aggravates gastritis
7. Do regular exercise. Atleast half an hour per day
8. Learn meditation techniques
9. Follow this regularly for 21 days. It is said that anything you practice regularly for 21 days becomes a habit

Ankle edema needs evaluations. Blood tests- liver function tests, renal function tests. ECG to rule out heart conditions.
